Blog Post #8: Importance of Duty

The Bhagavad Gita is an ancient text that teaches us the message of spiritual wisdom and the importance of duty from ancient India. In the story, Arjuna struggles to act in the Kurukshetra War when he discovers his friends, his family, and other people he knew on his opponents' side. He withdraws from the war, refusing to kill the people he loves and become responsible for their deaths.

Conflicted between love and duty, Arjuna decides to not fight in the battle until Krishna appears. Krishna convinces Arjuna to stick with his duty and fight the enemies even if it costs the lives of his loved ones. He wants Arjuna to fulfill his duty  without getting bad karma in which Arjuna listens to his advice and chose to follow his duty.

Every person has a duty to accomplish during our lifetime. It is a moral commitment to something or someone to make people happy.

A duty involves having a moral commitment to something, for example going to jury duty or volunteering in a homeless shelter. My duties in life is attending college to study animation, attending jury duty if called to attend, vote in every elections, transfer to a university to continue my study, and finding a job and live on my own in the future. Some of my duties including jury duty and voting in elections, are my civic duties while the rest are personal tasks. I perform my civic duties to contribute to society and to try to help anyone in need. My personal duties is what I always wanted to accomplish since I started attending college four years ago. The power that makes my duty to attend college comes from my parents. Going to college was not an option for me since my parents expected me to attend college after high school. My civic duties are tasks that I am supposed to accomplish as a U.S. citizen since we are expected to perform our duties.

Are these tasks actual duties I want to complete? To answer this question, they are. These are my duties I want to achieve to make my family happy. They expected me to do well in classes I take and to have a good career that I want to do. As for my civic duties, I do my best to make good choices to help make the world a better place. If I decide to do volunteer work, I would do whatever I can to help others in need. We all have different life goals we want to complete. We are raised to become good people to obey the laws and respect the rights and beliefs of others. As Immanuel Kant states, imperatives are instructions or commands. He mentions two types of imperatives which is hypothetical and categorical. Hypothetical imperatives are commands that depend on our goals we want to accomplish. If I wanted to be an animator, I have to attend college, take the classes I am required to take for my major, and get good grades. It is one of my personal goals that I want to fulfill.

Categorical imperative is a universal and rational command which is to treat others with respect the same way on how you wish to be treated. Kant also mentions that we can apply human reason to determine the right and rational choice we make. It is our duty to figure out the rights and wrongs of the choices we established.

What I think about my duties as a whole is that they are goals I want to complete. My duty is to help and support my family during these difficult times of hardship. It is my job to work hard to put a lot of effort on completing my tasks to prepare myself to contribute to society and help the community in the future.
